"Fashion is about dressing according to what’s fashionable. Style is more about being yourself.”- Oscar De La Renta.
Growing up was pretty interesting because of the evolution of trends, i have seen some particular themes go out of vogue and make a grand come back. Its pretty inspiring that a fashion goon would refer you back to yourself when it comes to style because at the end of the day its not about the flashy lights or loud music, its about you.
Transitioning into early teens, there is the need to receive the right kind of values and this sometimes translated into the community making sure that in your parent's bid to make a living, they did not allow you fall off the bus.
One of the things that i distinctly remember is the issue of boxers or no boxers for girls, then the hazy line between where to and where not to wear shorts and trousers to. On one of such days, when i knew the "concerned public" would be in attendance; I just did the needful, wore an eternally flowing skirt on my shorts and went my way. Of course it worked and i was basking in the comments on how pretty the 'Emily Oni Kaba' skirt looked, they were satisfied that the 'message' had hit home. But i was glowing for a different reason:
1. I had finally learnt how to pick my battles
2. I went out in shorts
But when i settled down it struck me that a lot of us walk through life showing off the skirts when we are actually dressed in shorts. I was very useful that day, very efficient and wasn't fussing that day because i was comfortable in my shorts.
What is the quality of your life?, what is your style?, when the curtain is drawn and its just you, who is there?
This valuable lesson i learnt explains why some pretty amazing people keep on behaving like delinquents. Inside that's all they see, so even though everyone else sees a picture, in the confines of their hearts they don't see the amazing things.
That is why we are told time and time again 'Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life' Proverbs 4:23 (NLT). You cannot be more stylish than your heart and you cannot move beyond how you see yourself.
I met Oscar De La Renta on E!News during red carpet events and movie premieres shows and I was fascinated about how people evolved, those that were wearing shorts under were obvious because of the way they wore the dresses and some that had funny looking cuts would still make a fashion statement in what ever piece they decided to wear thus proving his point. I hoped one day to wear a bespoke De La Renta *sobs* but now we will just settle for a label.
What is your style? It's always inside out, not the other way round.
